What is the proper way to operate a portable generator?

Follow the following steps to safely use a portable generator:

  1. Turn ALL circuit breakers off.
  2. Start Generator per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Slide interlock up and turn generator breaker on.
  4. Turn circuit breakers on one at a time to avoid overloading the generator.
  5. No more than 10 single pole 20 Amp breakers should be on at a time and possibly less depending on individual appliances.
  6. Turning off individual appliances fed by breakers also lowers the demand on the generator.

**Note: Air conditioning, range, and oven cannot be run on portable generator power. Electric hot water heater can be operated if all other power use is at a minimum. Recommend installing carbon monoxide detectors inside house.

When utility power is restored, following the following steps:

  1. Shut down generator per manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Turn off generator breaker.
  3. Slide interlock down.
  4. Turn main breaker and all other branch breakers on.
