What is the proper way to operate a portable generator?
Follow the following steps to safely use a portable generator:
- Turn ALL circuit breakers off.
- Start Generator per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Slide interlock up and turn generator breaker on.
- Turn circuit breakers on one at a time to avoid overloading the generator.
- No more than 10 single pole 20 Amp breakers should be on at a time and possibly less depending on individual appliances.
- Turning off individual appliances fed by breakers also lowers the demand on the generator.
**Note: Air conditioning, range, and oven cannot be run on portable generator power. Electric hot water heater can be operated if all other power use is at a minimum. Recommend installing carbon monoxide detectors inside house.
When utility power is restored, following the following steps:
- Shut down generator per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Turn off generator breaker.
- Slide interlock down.
- Turn main breaker and all other branch breakers on.
